In Peru, the jaguar is also known as otorongo, from the Quechua word “uturunku,” meaning “the one who kills with a leap.” It’s the largest cat on the American continent, a solitary predator that needs between 20,000 and 100,000 hectares of territory to hunt and take shelter. It’s closely tied to bodies of water, and within the Tambopata National Reserve it’s associated above all with riverbanks, where it hunts capybaras, one of its favorite prey.<\/span><\/p>\n

It’s worth saying clearly: jaguar attacks on humans in the wild are practically nonexistent. Studies analyzing more than 180 documented encounters recorded no unprovoked attacks. The jaguar actively avoids human contact, doesn’t consider us part of its diet, and its first reaction to a person is to move away, not to attack.<\/span><\/p>\n

The real danger runs in the opposite direction. The jaguar is classified as Near Threatened, both in Peru and internationally, mainly due to habitat loss, poaching, and the illegal trade of its fangs. If we want to contribute to its preservation, we don’t need to love the rainforest in the abstract or make large donations to conservation organizations, although that helps too, to make a real impact.
