While working rubber on the Urubamba River, Fitzcarraldo was attracted to gold after hearing rumors from the Ashaninka and Machiguenga Indians of an Inca fort protecting treasures, possibly in the vicinity of the Purus River.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Starting from the Mishagua, a tributary of the Urubamba River, he managed to reach its source, and from there he walked along the ridge to a new basin that he thought was the Pur\u00fas, although it was actually the Cashpajali River.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1884 he returned to the region, but as he descended Fitzcarrald gradually began to realize that the river was not the Purus, a fact that was confirmed when he encountered a Bolivian rubber tapper.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though he had the wrong river, Fitzcarrald had discovered a link connecting the two great Amazon basins, which meant more rubber to exploit and the beginning of the end for the indigenous tribes of Madre de Dios.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thus, the current Puerto Maldonado was identified as a strategic location. In 1901, a commission was created to explore the rainforest, and Don Juan Villalta led the expedition along the Tambopata River, starting from the province of Sandia.
